BEST FRIENDS MAKE YOU CRY
I anxiously pulled into the school parking lot a little
earlier than usual. According to
Britley we had made the “perfect” birthday party invitations just the night
before.
She had given me strict instructions to be at school early so she could hand out her pool party
themed invitations to friends she had meticulously selected.
She climbed into the car as usual with a big smile
stretched across her face. She was happy to see her mom but even happier when she
saw the neatly stacked pile of colorful invitations.
She grabbed the stack and off she disappeared into the maze
of children.
Before I knew it she was back in the car and the two of us sat waiting for
Breeley(sister) to finish after school flute lessons.
As we chatted, Britley mentioned that her best friend
Maizy had left school early. She
stated that Maizy couldn’t tell her why she was leaving early. It was a “secret” but promised that she
would tell as soon as she got clearance from her parents.
It hadn’t been 30 seconds from the time Britley told me all
about it that my phone rang. Recognizing
the name that appeared I quickly handed the phone to Britley.
After only a couple minutes of listening to her best friend
on the other end of the line, this
almost 10 year old of mine turned
into a completely different kid than the one who had climbed into my car only
minutes before.
Her countenance that had once sparkled with delight had
shifted to slumping shoulders and tear filled eyes. She began to cry uncontrollably
as she pulled the phone from her ear and stretched it out in my direction.
I gently took the phone and pressed it up to my ear. All I
could hear were the sobs of her best friend. I sympathetically said, “Maizey, Britley will call you back shortly.”
I held my breath as I asked, “Would you like to talk about
it?”
The only response I got was, “Oh MOM!” as she rested her
head on my shoulder.
The phone rang again.
It was Maizey.
Britley couldn’t bring herself to pick up the phone so she
just let it ring.
The voicemail just left the sobs of her best friend on the
other end of the phone with a faint “Ummm, when you get a chance, please call
me back, bye.”
I sat in the front seat hiding the tears that were streaming down my face as I heard my heart broken little girl explain that her best friend’s last day
of school had been today. She
would be moving to a different school.
